What you will find here

What this page covers

Cookies are a normal part of how most websites work, and this guide uses them sparingly. Below you will find a plain description of the cookie files we set, what each group is for, how analytics are reported, what third-party services may place on your device, and how to remove or block cookies from your own browser.

The wording here is intentionally plain. If any part is unclear, the contact page is the right place to ask a question about it, and we will answer in the same tone.

Plain definition

A short, practical explanation before the detail.

What cookies are

Cookies are small text files stored by your browser when you visit a website. They allow a site to remember information between pages or between visits, such as your preferences or whether you have already seen a notice. A cookie is not a program and it cannot run on your device on its own; it is a short note your browser keeps and sends back to the site that set it.

Two broad groups are usually described. Session cookies are cleared when you close the browser tab. Persistent cookies stay for a set period so the site remembers your choice the next time you visit. Similar technologies, such as local storage, work in comparable ways, and this policy treats them together.

What a cookie never does: it does not give us access to your files, your passwords, or other sites you have visited. It is limited to the information this site chooses to store and read back.

A short list, not a long one

Cookies we use

We keep the number of cookies small and purpose-bound. Every cookie we set falls into one of the two groups below, and neither group is used to build an advertising profile of you.

Essential cookies

Keep the site working and remember your cookie preferences so a notice does not reappear on every page.

Required for the site to function

Analytics cookies

Help us understand, in aggregate, which pages are read and how visitors move through the guide.

Aggregate reporting only

Advertising cookies

Not used on this site. We do not set cookies to track you across other websites or to serve ads.

Aggregate only

Analytics

Aggregate analytics tell us which pages are useful and where readers leave. The data is reported in aggregate and is not used to identify individual visitors. In practice this means we can see that a page on how web projects are built was read more often this month, but we cannot see that a particular person read it.

Analytics help us decide where to spend our writing time. When a page is opened and closed quickly, we look at the wording again. When a page is read to the end, we take that as a signal to expand the same section rather than add new ones. No individual visitor profile is created from this.

  • Page reads, counted in totals rather than per person.
  • Which sections readers reach before leaving.
  • Whether a guide page is found from the home page or from a search result.

A note on restraint

A guide that explains development work does not need to follow its readers around the web. The cookies here keep the pages working and tell us, in totals, which explanations are worth keeping.

That is the whole reasoning. If the list of cookies on this site changes, this page is updated in the same week, and the change is noted in the line at the top of the page.

Third-party tools are chosen per service, not per page.

Beyond our control

Third-party services

Where a third-party service is used to host the site or measure traffic, it may set its own cookies. Those providers handle data under their own policies, and their cookie names and lifetimes are outside our control.

In practice, that means you may see a cookie set by the company that provides our hosting or our traffic measurement. We pick services that keep their settings simple and that report in aggregate, but we cannot change how their cookies work. If you want to block those, the browser controls described below are the reliable route, because they apply to every site rather than only to ours.

Questions about a specific provider can be sent through the contact page, and we will say plainly which service is involved and where to read its own policy.

Your controls

Managing cookies

You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to block cookies entirely or to clear them after each session. Blocking essential cookies may affect how the site works.

If you clear your browser cookies, the preference you set here is cleared with them, and the cookie notice will appear again on your next visit. That is expected behaviour, not an error.

Changes to this policy

If the cookies used on this site change, this page is updated to reflect it. Continued use of the site after an update means the revised policy applies.

Version note

This revision was reviewed on 2 November 2026 and replaces any earlier version of the cookie policy.

Common questions

Do I need to accept cookies to read this guide?

No. The guide pages can be read without accepting analytics cookies. Essential cookies still run so the site works and your preference is remembered.

Can I clear my choice later?

Yes. Clearing cookies in your browser settings removes the stored preference along with the rest. The cookie notice will appear again on your next visit so you can choose again.

Do you use cookies for advertising?

No. This site does not set advertising cookies and does not follow readers across other websites. The cookies in use are limited to keeping the pages working and reporting reading totals in aggregate.

Where can I read the rest of the site policies?

The privacy policy explains how personal information is handled, and the terms of service set out the rules for using the site. Both are linked from every page of the guide.
